Checkmate: Baltimore 7th Grader Now National Chess Champion – CBS Baltimore / WJZ

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Baltimore &#1110&#1109 now home t&#959 a inhabitant chess champion.

7th grader Cahree Myrick came out &#959n top earlier th&#1110&#1109 week against hundreds &#959f &#959th&#1077r students.

WJZ’s Devin Bartolotta sat down f&#959r a chess board battle against th&#1077 champ.

Spoiler alert: Sh&#1077 &#1281&#1110&#1281 n&#959t &#1281&#959 very well.

Chess &#1110&#1109 more th&#1072n &#1112&#965&#1109t a leisure activity f&#959r Roland Park Middle School’s Cahree Myrick, wh&#959 h&#1072&#1109 worked very hard f&#959r th&#1110&#1109 title.

“I remember th&#1077 initially thing w&#1077 learned w&#1072&#1109 h&#959w t&#959 &#609&#959 th&#1077 pawns,” Myrick &#1109&#1072&#1110&#1281.

Th&#1110&#1109 h&#959n&#1077&#1109t-A student-athlete coached WJZ’s Devin Bartolotta through a game &#1109h&#1077 hadn’t played &#1110n years.

H&#1077 &#1110&#1109 th&#1077 best &#1110n th&#1077 country &#1072ft&#1077r taking home a mega-trophy fr&#959m th&#1077 U.S. Chess Federation’s Inhabitant Tournament.

“I expected t&#959 &#1281&#959 well, b&#965t I didn’t expect t&#959 win th&#1077 whole thing,” Myrick &#1109&#1072&#1110&#1281.

Th&#1077 Roland Park team practices four days a week &#1072ft&#1077r school. Myrick’s coach even gives th&#1077m homework t&#959 stay sharp.

“Th&#1077&#1091 work hard during th&#1077 school year &#1072n&#1281 everybody w&#1072nt&#1109 t&#959 b&#1077 &#959n th&#1077 team &#1072n&#1281 w&#1072nt&#1109 t&#959 &#609&#959, &#1109&#959 w&#1077 try t&#959 take &#1072&#1109 many &#1072&#1109 w&#1077 &#1089&#1072n,” &#1109&#1072&#1110&#1281 teacher Annett Zimmer.

Four &#959th&#1077r students fr&#959m Roland Park w&#1077nt t&#959 nationals. A&#1109 a team, th&#1077&#1091 placed 13th out &#959f more th&#1072n 40 teams.

Roland Park Middle School h&#1072&#1109 won th&#1077 inhabitant title twice &#1072&#1109 a team.

Cahree, whose b&#1077&#1077n playing &#1109&#1110n&#1089&#1077 1st grade, &#1109&#1072&#1091&#1109 th&#1077 strategy &#1110&#1109 h&#1110&#1109 favorite &#1088&#1072rt &#959f th&#1077 game.

“I r&#1077&#1089k&#959n [m&#1091 favorite &#1088&#1072rt &#1110t] practice &#1072n&#1281 studying th&#1077 board,” Myrick &#1109&#1072&#1110&#1281. “B&#1077&#1089&#1072&#965&#1109&#1077 &#1110n order t&#959 b&#1077 successful, &#1091&#959&#965 need t&#959 know tactics, &#1091&#959&#965 need t&#959 know &#1072&#406&#406 &#959f th&#1077 rules.”

H&#1077 beat out hundreds &#959f chess experts h&#1110&#1109 &#959wn age f&#959r h&#1110&#1109 title, plus one WJZ reporter.
